Cable Testing

The Cable Prowler provides full cable testing on any category network, coax, or telephone cable. It will display wire map, numbered ID remotes, and any faults, including shorts, opens, miswires, split pairs, and reverses. The full-featured Cable Prowler measures cable length (using TDRtechnology) and generates tone levels for signal tracing andcable identification on all pairs, a selected pair, or a selected pin. All of this is displayed in a full color graphical display for easy viewing in any environment. CableProwler also has the ability to name each cable and save alltest results. Cable results can be exported to a computer via micro USB cable for record keeping and printing.

Network - PoE Testing

The Cable Prowler enables quick identification of a network drops link capability and current link status. CableProwler also detects the presence of PoE on the network dropand what class of PoE per IEEE 802.3 af/at with load test for voltage drop. These network tests can also be saved for record keeping and printing.

Applications

  • Measure cable length and length to faults using TDR technology
  • Network testing of link capability, link status, and link light
  • Test PoE to ensure adequate power for powered devices such as VoIP phones
  • Conduct single ended and remote cable tests with displayof PASS, wire map, ID, and faults for network & coax cables
  • Tone and trace cables
  • Locate unlabeled network & coax cables with up to 20 remote identifiers

Cable Prowler VS Fluke Networks MicroScanners

    Cable Testing:

    Q. What is VoP?

    A. The Cable Prowler uses Time Domain Reflectometry to measure cable length and the distance to faults. VoP is the signal percentage compared to the speed of light. To calibrate the VoP, please refer to page 13 of Cable Prowler instruction manual.

    Q. What does "Split" mean?

    A. A cable can be wired with correct continuity but not withcorrect pairing. This most often happens when the cable is terminated consistently at both ends, but in the wrong order. The Cable Prowle will display "Split" next to the pair(s) that are not paired correctly.

    Q. What is an "Open"?

    A. Cable Pair(s) do not have continuity throughout the cableor the Cable Prowler? remote is not detected. An open condition will be displayed in the wire map diagram.

    Q. What is a "Short"?

    A. Cable Pair(s) are making an electrical connection with each other or foreign object.

    Q. Why are the lengths different for each pair?

    A. Due to the varying twists of each pair, their length will differ.

    Q. What's the difference between the remotes?

    A. The Network Telephone test remotes (black remotes with the white label) are used for performing a cable test and providing an ID. The small yellow remotes will provide an IDonly. You can also use the coax remotes to perform a test and obtain an ID for coax cables.

    Network/ PoE:

    Q. Why doesn't the Cable Prowler show PoE Results?

    A. Make sure the PoE test is on. If the "PoE Off" soft key icon is displayed, press the soft key below it to activate the PoE test. If PoE results are not displayed with when thePoE test is on, check your switch to verify that PoE is enabled.

    Q. What does Link Flow Control mean?

    A. Link Flow control is a switch configuration feature that pauses data transmission when there is system congestion. The Cable Prowler? identifies if this feature is enabled on the switch.

    Q. What are FDX and HDX?

    A. FDX is an acronym for Full duplex. HDX is an acronym for Half Duplex.

    Cable Prowle Application:

    Q. Why doesn't the Application detect my Cable Prowler?

    A. Make sure your Cable Prowler? is powered on and plugged into your computer using a micro USB cable. While plugged in to your PC, turn the Cable Prowler off then back on.

    Q. There was an error when I attempted to update the Firmware

    A. If the Cable Prowler is still on, click on "Begin Download" on the application again.

    Q. My Cable Prowler won't turn on after I updatedthe Firmware.

    A. An error occurred during the Firmware installation but don't worry, it's still in boot loader mode (program mode). Unplug the Cable Prowler, close the application, then plug the Cable Prowler back in to your PC. Open the application and follow the Firmware update instructions. The Cable Prowler? screen will remain dark until it has been successfully updated.

    Cable Prowler Accessories:

    Q. How do you test an Ethernet cable via Ethernet wall plate/server/router ports?

    A. The 12inch Ethernet Patch Cable (CA016) allows you to connect to an RJ45 plug to test a shielded or non-shielded Ethernet cable.

    Q. How do I test unterminated Ethernet cables?

    A. The 8-way Alligator Clip Cord Set (CA015) allows you to test unterminated Ethernet cable. This unique cord set has an RJ45 plug on one end and an alligator clip connected to each wire on the other end. This accessory allows you to make sure cables have not been damaged before you spend the time and money to terminate them.

    Q. How do I extend the life of my RJ45 Jack?

    A. The Sacrificial RJ45 Cable (CA014) extends the life of the RJ45 jacks on your tester and remote(s). Plug the sacrificial cable into the tester or remote and then plug the cables to be tested into the sacrificial cables. Continue testing cables with the sacrificial cables plugged into the tester or remote(s). If the sacrificial cables become worn or damaged, simply replace them. This prevents downtime and saves money by not having to send your tester in for an RJ45 jack replacement.

    Q. How do I test cables with BNC connectors?

    A. The F-jack to BNC jack allows you to easily test coax cables that have been terminated with BNC connectors.
